US back democracy in Myanmar ahead of anniversary

The United States on Friday highlighted its support for efforts to establish democracy in military-run Myanmar, ahead of the country's 61st anniversary of independence. State Department spokesman Sean McCormack alluded to the human rights crackdown by the military junta that has been in power since 1962, as he commemorated the anniversary of independence from Britain on January 4, 1948.

W. de Klerk, Lech Walesa, Tandiwe Chama, Irish singer and activist Bono, former French-Colombian hostage Ingrid Betancourt and the leader of Italy, Walter Veltroni, 12 Dec 2008. Aung San Suu Kyi, who won the Nobel prize in 1991, has been detained in her Rangoon home for 13 of the past 19 years, receiving regular visits from only her doctor and lawyer.
